Technical Glossary

Concise definitions of key terms used across Kepler Client and the Minecraft ecosystem.

Fabric

Mod Loader

A lightweight, modular mod loader for Minecraft. Kepler initially supports Minecraft 1.21.x with Fabric; builds for 1.20.1, 1.21.1, 1.21.4, 1.21.8, 1.21.11, and 26.3 are in private testing.

Forge

Mod Loader

A long-standing modding framework for Minecraft Java Edition. In Kepler's roadmap, Forge support is planned for later stages following initial Fabric release support.

NeoForge

Mod Loader

An open-source mod loader built for modern Minecraft versions. NeoForge support is planned alongside Forge in later stages of the Kepler roadmap.

Modrinth

Mod Catalog

An open-source community platform for Minecraft mods and modpacks. Kepler's mod catalog starts with Modrinth; mod search, dependency resolution, version compatibility checks, and SHA-1 verified downloads run through Modrinth.

JVM (Java Virtual Machine)

Runtime

The runtime environment that executes Minecraft Java Edition. Kepler automatically selects the required Java version from Mojang's version manifest and generates JVM startup flag presets (Balanced, Low hardware, High performance).

RAM / Heap

Memory

The memory pool (-Xms / -Xmx) allocated by the JVM to store world chunks, textures, and mod objects while playing. Kepler analyzes your total system RAM, mod count, and Minecraft version to calculate a recommended heap allocation.

FPS (Frames Per Second)

In-Game Metric

The number of frames rendered to your screen each second. Kepler's in-development FPS/ping HUD module lets you monitor real-time frame rate and server latency on screen.

HUD (Heads-Up Display)

In Development

On-screen status overlays displayed during gameplay. Kepler includes 4 in-game modules in development: FPS/ping HUD, Keystrokes + CPS, Coordinates + direction, and Zoom + Fullbright.

Anti-cheat

Multiplayer

Server-side or client-side protection systems that monitor modified clients and network packets on multiplayer servers. Each server enforces its own allowed mod and client rules; always verify a server's policy before joining.

Profile (Instance)

Launcher

An isolated game setup containing a specific Minecraft version, mod loader, mod list, JVM settings, screenshots, and worlds in its own directory. Profiles can be duplicated, backed up, or shared via a KEPLER1: share code.

Crash Report

Troubleshooting

A diagnostic summary generated when the game exits unexpectedly, combining the exit code and recent console (stdout/stderr) lines. Kepler's troubleshooter highlights suspected mod conflicts and automatically masks usernames and file paths when sharing.

SmartScreen

Windows Security

The Windows protected your PC prompt shown by Windows for newly released applications that are not yet signed with a digital code-signing certificate. It is not a virus detection and can be bypassed via More info > Run anyway.

SHA-256

File Verification

A cryptographic checksum used to verify that a downloaded installer is intact and unmodified. You can compute the hash in PowerShell using Get-FileHash and compare it against the checksum published on the download page.

.mrpack (Modpack Archive)

Package Format

The standard Modrinth modpack archive format. Kepler imports .mrpack files with path traversal protection and SHA-1 verification, and can export your profile along with its settings and worlds.
